The History of Carpet Cleaning

Posted By Tubro Carpet Cleaning || 3-Oct-2014

Sick and tired of fretting over dirt and grime in your carpets? Tired of trying to figure out how to find quality, affordable carpet cleaning in Seattle? Well, you’re not the first person to face this dilemma. In fact, evidence shows that carpet cleaning has been in existence since the 19th century. While modern carpet cleaning typically consists of plugging in an electronic device that systematically gets rid of dirt and grime, the methods of carpet cleaning have not always been so simple.

New Ideas

The Industrial Revolution inspired people throughout Europe and North America with new ideas of cleanliness. Before the revolution, people mostly protected their carpets with druggets, which were thick and heavy woolen items spread underneath tables and other areas that might be exposed to food and other stains. Wealthy people often used canvas to cover their carpets while they were away on vacation or during social events in which a lot of people would be in their home. One of the most commonly used methods of cleaning carpets during this time was beating rugs with brooms to remove dirt, sand, and dust; although, this method was not always successful.

New Methods Emerge

By the 1830s, new methods emerged as creative housewives began to record their methods for removing stains. One such method involved using lemon juice and a loaf of bread to scrub the carpet. The first manually-operated vacuum cleaner was introduced in the 1860s and 1870s. A variety of other methods emerged until in 1905. Walter Griffiths Manufacturer sold a manually-operated cleaner that was portable and easy to store. It was one of the first cleaners to look similar to vacuums used today.

A Changing Mindset

During the 1920s and 1930s, carpet became unfashionable, so the vacuum cleaning industry fell off the radar for a number of years. At the same time, however, people who owned rugs did see the value of vacuuming before shampooing the carpet. During World War II, inventors started using chemicals, which eventually evolved into modern carpet cleaning methods. Since then, the methods have become more efficient. So, the next time you call a company like Tubro Carpet Cleaning for service, think of the thousands of people before you and the many methods they used to clean their own carpets.
